Hikvision ColorVu vs AcuSense: Which Camera Is Right for You?

Hikvision ColorVu vs AcuSense is the comparison we are asked about most when customers in Maputo choose new cameras. ColorVu gives you full-colour video at night; AcuSense gives you AI alerts that ignore rain, leaves and animals. Here is a clear comparison, based on what we see on real sites, to help you choose.

Updated on 23 October 2026.

What is Hikvision ColorVu?

ColorVu cameras deliver full-colour images 24/7, even in very low light. Instead of switching to black-and-white night mode, ColorVu uses a very sensitive sensor and a wide F1.0 lens, with a warm supplement light, to capture colour at night. This is ideal when identifying clothing colour, vehicle colour or skin tone matters, for example at shop entrances, parking areas and building perimeters.

In practice, the difference shows up in the footage you hand to the police. A black-and-white night image tells you that someone in a dark jacket crossed the yard. A ColorVu image tells you the jacket was red, the car was silver and the gate opened at two in the morning. That detail is often what makes a recording useful.

ColorVu works best with a little light around it. Street lights, a porch lamp or the camera's own warm light are enough. The warm light is visible from outside, which also tells anyone passing that the area is watched.

What is Hikvision AcuSense?

AcuSense cameras use deep-learning AI to tell people and vehicles apart from other motion such as rain, leaves or animals. This cuts false alarms sharply and lets you search recordings faster. AcuSense is a strong fit for intrusion detection, perimeter protection and after-hours monitoring, where you only want to be alerted to real threats.

The second advantage is search. When something happens, nobody wants to scroll through eight hours of video. On an AcuSense recorder you filter the timeline to show only people or only vehicles, and the event you are looking for usually turns up in minutes.

Some AcuSense models also have a red and blue strobe light and a built-in speaker. When someone enters a protected zone at night, the camera can flash and play a warning message, which stops many intruders before they reach the door.

ColorVu vs AcuSense at a glance

  • Choose ColorVu if your priority is clear, full-colour footage at night for identification.
  • Choose AcuSense if your priority is smart alerts and fewer false alarms.
  • Choose both: many Hikvision cameras combine ColorVu and AcuSense in one device, giving you colour night vision and AI detection.
  • Shop entrance or till: ColorVu, because colour helps identify people and clothing.
  • Perimeter wall, yard or warehouse at night: AcuSense, because alerts matter more than colour where nobody should be.
  • Main gate or parking: a camera with both.

Where we install each in Maputo and Matola

Shops on busy streets in Maputo usually have street lights on for most of the night, and ColorVu gives excellent colour at the door and the window. Warehouses and factory yards in Matola have a different problem: large areas, wind moving trees and plastic sheeting, and dogs at night. There, AcuSense stops the phone from ringing every few minutes for nothing. Houses with a garden often use AcuSense along the wall and ColorVu at the gate.

If you are still deciding between analog and IP cameras, read our guide on analog or IP cameras for your shop. Both families come in ColorVu and AcuSense versions, so the choice of technology does not lock you into one type of cabling.

Our recommendation

For most businesses in Mozambique, a camera that combines both technologies offers the best value. We visit the site, look at the light at night and recommend the right model, resolution and lens for each position. Once installed, you watch everything on your phone with the Hik-Connect app, and AcuSense alerts arrive with a snapshot. Frequently asked questions

Does ColorVu work with no light at all?

ColorVu needs a small amount of ambient light to produce colour. In complete darkness the built-in warm supplement light switches on, so the image stays in colour where other cameras would turn black and white.

Can AcuSense send alerts to my phone?

Yes. When an AcuSense camera or NVR detects a person or vehicle in a protected zone, the Hik-Connect app can push a notification with a snapshot, so you only get alerts for real events.

Do I need a special recorder for these cameras?

Both technologies work with current Hikvision NVRs and DVRs. To use the AcuSense search and alarm features fully, the recorder should also support AcuSense; we confirm this when we design your system.

Can I add these cameras to my existing system?

Often yes. Hikvision IP cameras of both types work with most recent Hikvision NVRs, and the analog versions work with compatible DVRs. We check your recorder model and firmware first, so you only replace what you have to.
